Out Loud Chorus is seeking an ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Purpose of Position:    To develop and carry out artistic programming, collaborations, and concerts that enhance the mission of the choir.

Salary:                         $12,000 Annually

Chorus Mission:        Out Loud Chorus is a mixed chorus for the LGBTQ+ community, yet open to all. Out Loud provides continuing musical education and performance experience as well as a social outlet for persons interested in choral music and its production. Out Loud is fun and flexible, open to all levels of ability, and committed to embodying the diversity of our community.  In addition, the chorus seeks to educate the general public about choral music and reduce bigotry and discrimination against our community through its performances.

Qualifications:  
  1. Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • BA or Advanced Degree in Music with an emphasis in choral conducting or equivalent conducting experience (minimum 5 years preferred)
    • Experience working with singers of significantly varying skill levels
    • Basic piano skills for warm ups, sectional rehearsals, and vocal placements (weekly rehearsal & performance accompanist provided)
    • Commitment to embracing the mission of Out Loud Chorus
    • Strong leadership skills
    • Ability to work with a diverse group of members and volunteers
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Job Responsibilities:
  1. Choral Conducting and Musical Artistic Direction:
    • Conduct the chorus in all performances and rehearsals
    • Attend weekly rehearsals on Monday evenings in Ann Arbor, MI
    • Recommend an annual performance schedule in collaboration with the Board
    • Work with the Music Selection Committee to select themes and purchase musical pieces for 2 concerts per year
    • Determine concert order
    • Audition members for appropriate section placement when needed
    • Work with chorus on vocal performance and skills
    • Work with a member committee to select solo & ensemble pieces for each concert
    • Audition and select members for solos within full chorus pieces
    • Identify, coach, and supervise chorus section leaders
    • Work with the Librarian to secure new arrangements and performance rights where appropriate
  1. Operational Responsibilities:
    • Assist with selection, appointment and supervision of accompanist
    • Attend monthly Board meetings
    • Attend Music Selection Committee meetings
    • Contributes artistic vision to grant applications and funding as requested
    • Identify and hire presenters for vocal clinics and other workshops
    • Assist in identifying and hiring instrumental musicians for each concert
    • Work with the Board and general membership to determine long-term goals
    • Work with the Board to develop an annual budget
  1. Community Outreach:
    • Help maintain a good working relationship with GALA Choruses and other choruses within the GALA network
    • Participate in and conduct OLC performances requested by the community, e.g., Art Fair, Out Fest, and Pride performances
  1. Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
    • Demonstrate excellent verbal presentation skills to enhance concerts for the audience
    • Communicate all aspects of musicianship to the chorus in a clear and concise way to elicit the best possible sound production
    • Conduct rehearsals in a manner that keeps members engaged, upbeat, and enthusiastic
    • Handle feedback in a positive and constructive way
    • Provide positive reinforcement to the choir to enhance retention and ensure success in mastering musical pieces
